First proposed by Qualcomm and Ericsson, LTE-U uses 4G LTE wireless technology in unlicensed spectrum. Although LTE-U could be used to offload much of wireless data traffic off of traditional 4G, the technology has created concerns about interference with WiFi networks, since the WiFi protocol will "politely" back away from bands that are in use.
