A portmanteau of "light" and "radar," which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, Lidar is a laser-based measuring system for range finding and mapping. Typically using eye-safe, low-power infrared pulses, Lidar is a key component in allowing autonomous vehicles to "see" their surroundings.
